Preventative Hardwood Floor Maintenance

Floor Protectors

Make sure your tables and chairs have soft felt floor protector pads on the bottom of their legs to help prevent scratches. These felt pads need to be kept free of grit and will periodically need to be replaced. Find floor protectors here.

Mats and Area Rugs

Use exterior walk-off mats and an area rug just inside your doors to help keep grit off of your floors. Place area rugs in high traffic areas, especially in front of your kitchen sink, stove and refrigerator.

Pets

Keep your pet's nails clipped to prevent finish and wood damage.

Moving Furniture & Appliances

When moving heavy furniture and appliances, always pick them up rather than sliding or rolling them across the floors.

Shoes

Both men's and women's shoes should be properly maintained. Heels with an unprotected tip will cause damage to your hardwood floors. Furthermore, a "shoe's off" policy will extend the longevity of your floors by tracking far less grit in and around the house.

Hazard Areas

Be especially attentive to potential spill areas, such as dishwashers, sinks, icemakers, stovetops and bathrooms. Other potential spots include household plants and Christmas tree stands.

Pitfalls to Avoid

Do not wet mop your wood floors. Do not use ammonia or household dust cleaners on your wood floors. Do not wax or use wax finish on top of your VerMeister floors.
